The struggle to survive was the thing that really struck me. "It was one of those moments where you come very close to your own demise and afterward you start reflecting on what has happened. "It took nearly two days to find a new way out of the cave," Wight says. "We don't have the rich pedigree of Hollywood presence but we're making films that are up to the task and every bit as good.In 1988, Andrew Wight was leading an expedition of 14 people in exploring a large underwater cave in Australia's Nullarbor Plains when a storm flooded the entrance and caused the cave to collapse, trapping them inside. "Sanctum is a little big Australian movie and people in Hollywood are expecting great big things for it," Andrew Wight says. He says the movie is another important part of Australia proving it has a place in the international film making industry. It's unclear exactly where in the movie the local scenes will appear, but Wight said filming in the limestone caves helped to add some authenticity to the shots taken inside tanks. It's believed they spent a couple of weeks filming underground. I thought about the characters and thought gee that's great stuff for a story and maybe even a film."Īlmost 18 months ago, the film makers visited the Limestone Coast and caves in and around Mount Gambier. "Years later I was thinking about the day of the collapse, that near death experience and how it really defined the lives of a lot of people. on the last day of the expedition we have a freak storm that came across the area and flooded the cave entrance and it collapsed and trapped 15 of us below ground for nearly two days before we were able to get out safely," Andrew told ABC Radio.
The story focuses on a near-death experience where Andrew and 12 others were trapped while cave diving following a freak storm on the Nullarbor Plain in 1988. For his latest project, he teamed up with James Cameron, the creator of blockbuster titles Titanic and Avatar. The movie is the brainchild of farmer and cave diver, Andrew Wight, who became familiar with the local caves while growing up in the Western Victorian town of Harrow.Īndrew has produced more than 45 films, documentaries, tv specials and 3D movies. The Australian film Sanctum 3D opens on Thursday and despite it being much publicised as a film shot in Queensland, Limestone Coast viewers may notice some familiar scenes.
